The historical events of the town begin with a castle that was already important before the year 1000, but its fame is linked to the life of Saint Francis, who loved the "raw stone" that dominates the village, receiving the stigmata in 1224. The Sanctuary of La Verna it is by far the focal point of the area: witness to extraordinary events, guardian of high spiritual values and remarkable works of art - including the glazed ceramics of Della Robbia - the Franciscan citadel is also at the centre of an incomparable natural setting, with the rocks of the cliff embraced by a magnificent forest of tall trees. The surroundings show an open landscape populated only by tiny villages, with wide expanses of gullies that tear through the woods.
