The town, located on the Florentine side of the Park, is the ideal starting point for excursions to Falterona, Falco, and Monte Acuto. Castagno is the birthplace of the painter Andrea del Castagno, a great Florentine Renaissance artist, and a permanent exhibition in the Park Visitor Centre describes his work. The landscape around the ancient town is characterized by extensive and suggestive "marronete", woods of centuries-old chestnut trees cultivated for the production of chestnuts.
